Two truths and 1 Lie about being An Au pair

MY PERSONAL AU PAIR STORY

Before becoming an au pair, I imagined my year abroad would be filled with beautiful cities, spontaneous weekend trips and endless adventures across Europe.

Some of that happened.

But the reality looked a little different from what I had pictured. So, here are two truths and one lie about my au pair experience.

TRUTH 01

I Truly Experienced a New Culture

Living with a host family taught me far more about the country than I could ever have learned as a tourist.

I did not simply visit famous landmarks. I experienced normal family life.

I tried unfamiliar meals, celebrated new holidays and slowly learned the small traditions that mattered to my host family.

At first, some things felt strange. Mealtimes were different. Family routines were new. Even the way people communicated took some getting used to.

I was not simply visiting another culture. I was living inside it.

Over time, those differences became one of the most meaningful parts of my au pair year.

TRUTH 02

I Improved My Language Skills

When I first arrived, I felt nervous about speaking.

I worried about making mistakes and sometimes avoided conversations because I could not find the right words.

The children changed that very quickly.

They talked to me constantly, corrected my pronunciation without hesitation and somehow understood what I was trying to say.

I also practised at language school, in shops, on public transport and while meeting new friends.

I did not become fluent overnight—but every mistake helped me become more confident.

THE LIE

I Travelled All the Time

This was the biggest difference between my expectations and reality.

I travelled, but certainly not every weekend.

Flights, train tickets, hotels and meals were expensive on an au pair budget. My host family occasionally travelled without me because paying for another ticket, hotel room and activities was not always financially possible.

Sometimes, I also chose to stay home.

Having the house to myself, resting and enjoying some privacy actually felt better than rushing into another trip.

My adventures were often smaller:

  • Visiting a nearby town

  • Taking an affordable day trip

  • Exploring my host city

  • Meeting friends in another region

And honestly? Those experiences were still special.

The Support That Changed My Au Pair Year

MORE THAN A MATCHING PLATFORM

Auost supported me throughout my entire au pair year through live events and regular online meet-ups.

I met other au pairs, shared experiences and always had somewhere to ask questions when I felt unsure, lonely or overwhelmed.

With Auost, I never felt as though I was simply using an online matching platform.

The support went far beyond helping me find a host family.

Auost gave me a sense of community, connection and reassurance throughout my stay.

Knowing that I could speak to people who truly understood the au pair experience helped me feel less alone and more confident when dealing with everyday challenges.

What I Took Home With Me

Looking back, the best part of my au pair year was not how many countries I visited.

It was:

The culture I experienced.
The language I learned.
The confidence I gained.
And the people who supported me along the way.
