Do not Rush To Find an Au Pair

Finding support quickly may feel urgent but choosing the right person deserves time.

Recently, an acquaintance told me she was looking for an au pair.

She explained that she did not want to use an au pair matching platform because the process felt too slow. Social media groups seemed faster, and paying between €50 and €100 for premium platform features did not feel necessary to her.

My first thought was: I understand.
When a family urgently needs support, waiting can feel incredibly frustrating.

Between work, childcare, school appointments and everyday responsibilities, many parents simply want to find someone kind and reliable as quickly as possible.

But our conversation made me pause.

An Au Pair Is More Than Childcare

An au pair is not simply someone who helps with babysitting.

They are often a young person leaving their home, family, language and familiar culture to become part of yours. They may share your busiest mornings, your children’s difficult moments, family meals, school runs, laughter and bedtime routines.

That kind of relationship needs time to grow.

Social media groups may generate responses quickly, but a fast reply is not always the same as a suitable match.

Families and au pairs need time to speak honestly about:

Childcare experience · Safety · Working hours · Cultural differences · Communication · Household expectations

A warm profile and one friendly conversation cannot tell you everything you need to know.

Would You Choose a Kindergarten This Quickly?

I asked my acquaintance to imagine choosing a kindergarten or school.

Most parents would want to ask questions, understand the environment and feel confident that their child would be safe, respected and supported.

Choosing an au pair deserves that same care.

This does not mean that every family must pay for a platform. Free social media groups can also lead to wonderful connections.

However, structured profiles, secure chats, video calls, identity verification and matching tools can help both sides make a more informed decision.

The Real Cost of Rushing

A rushed match may initially feel easier. But when expectations do not align, it can become stressful for everyone—especially the children and the au pair.

Families should also look honestly at the full financial commitment. Hosting an au pair may include:

Pocket money, food, accommodation, insurance, language-course support, transportation and additional household expenses.

My honest opinion:
A platform fee of €50 to €100 should be considered in relation to the responsibility of welcoming someone into your home—not simply as a fee for accessing profiles.

The Right Match Is Worth Waiting For

The right au pair may become someone your children remember for many years. They may bring a new language, traditions, laughter and warmth into your home.

So take the extra video call.

Ask the uncomfortable question.

Talk about ordinary days not only the exciting ones.

You are not simply choosing help. You are welcoming someone into your family.

And the right connection is worth waiting for.
