Lessons from My First Month as an Au Pair

Moving abroad at 18 to become an au pair is like stepping into a whole new world — exciting, overwhelming, and full of surprises. My first month was a rollercoaster of emotions, lessons, and unforgettable moments that shaped my entire experience.

One of the biggest lessons I learned was to expect the unexpected. From figuring out public transport to navigating cultural quirks, every day was a new challenge. I quickly realized that flexibility and an open mind were my best tools.

Language barriers were another hurdle. Sometimes, I felt like I was playing charades with my host family, but their kindness and patience made all the difference. Plus, my host toddler taught me more English than any app ever could — through giggles, pointing, and lots of repetition!

Homesickness hit me hard, especially during quiet evenings when I missed my family and friends. But connecting with other au pairs and exploring my new city helped me feel less alone. I also learned the importance of self-care — carving out “me time” to recharge, whether it was a coffee break or a quick call home. Living abroad at 18 isn’t always easy, but it’s one of the most rewarding experiences you can have. If you’re about to start your au pair journey, buckle up! It’s a wild ride full of growth, adventure, and memories that will last a lifetime.
