A Day in My Life as an Au Pair in Europe: Love, Learning & Little Adventures
Ever wondered what it’s really like to live a day in the life of an au pair in Europe? It’s a mix of structure and spontaneity, routines and surprises — and every day brings something new. Here’s what a typical weekday looks like for me as an au pair living abroad.
Morning Routine: Early Starts and Smiling Faces
My mornings start early. After I wake up, I help prepare breakfast, pack school lunches, and get the kids dressed and ready. Then it's off to school drop-off — often involving some cheerful chaos, backpacks flying and last-minute sock searches.
Once the kids are at school, I usually have a few hours to myself. Depending on the day, I might attend a language class, run errands for the family, or meet up with other au pairs for a coffee break. These morning hours are perfect for self-care and cultural exploration.
Afternoon: Snack Time, Homework, and Play
In the afternoon, I pick the kids up from school and help them settle in at home. We share a snack, go over homework, and usually head outside for some fresh air — whether it’s a walk to the park, riding bikes, or a quick trip to the local bakery for a treat.
These little everyday moments are where real bonds are built — and honestly, they’re my favorite part of the job.
Evenings: Family Time and Wind-Down
Evenings are all about family routines. I help with dinner prep, join the family at the table, and then it’s bath time, books, and bedtime for the kids. After they’re asleep, I unwind — maybe reading, journaling, or chatting with fellow au pairs on auost.
The Bigger Picture
Each day is different, and yes, sometimes exhausting — but always meaningful. I’m learning a new language, gaining life skills, and creating memories that will last a lifetime.
