How much does an au pair cost?
An au pair costs a host family in Germany significantly less than a traditional nanny. However, families should still realistically plan for all ongoing au pair costs. These include pocket money, language course contributions, insurance, accommodation and meals.
In Germany, an au pair receives €280 pocket money per month. In addition, the host family contributes at least €70 per month towards language learning and covers the necessary travel costs to the nearest suitable German language course. The family also provides a private room and free meals.
The required health and accident insurance, including coverage for pregnancy and childbirth, is also paid by the host family.
Depending on insurance, food costs, transportation and additional benefits, families should expect total au pair costs of approximately €550 to €850 per month. This amount is intended as a guideline and may vary depending on the family.
