Host families in Germany are responsible for ensuring that their au pair has the necessary insurance coverage. Health and accident insurance are required. Pregnancy and childbirth must also be covered. The host family bears the cost of this insurance.

An au pair arrangement in Germany is generally not subject to statutory social security contributions. The au pair therefore needs suitable private insurance coverage for the duration of the stay.
The host family pays the insurance premiums for the required health and accident insurance coverage of the au pair.
The insurance should cover the entire duration of the au pair stay and should be effective no later than the agreed start date.
Host families should not wait until the au pair arrives to organize insurance.

For au pairs who require a visa, proof of insurance may already be relevant during the entry or residence permit process.
